About The Club

The North London Lions play in the AFL Britain London League. All players are welcome to join the club, and participation from British and EU players is actively encouraged.

AFL Britain was formed in 1990 as The British Australian Rules Football League (BARFL) by an enthusiastic group of homesick Aussies wanting to enjoy the Great Australian Game in the UK. Since those early days, the League's growth has been extraordinary. What largely began as a Sunday afternoon knock around, has evolved into a 3-tier 13 team competition with close links with other Australian football leagues around the world. AFL Britain's aim remains to promote Australian Rules Football to British and EU players and supporters, while providing ex-pat Australians with an opportunity to play the game they love.

British / EU Qualification

To be classified as EU you must have a British/Irish/EU issued passport and have lived at least 80% of your life in Europe - Australians with EU Passports don't qualify!

All British/Irish/EC players will be eligible for selection in the BARFL representative team, which will compete in the annual Federation Cup match, and which last year, attracted 3000 spectators and TV coverage.

The North London Lions will field 3 teams in 2008:

1st Grade - The Premiership

2nd Grade - The Conference

3rd Grade - The Thirds

Club History

North London Lions have a long and proud association with Australian Football in the UK. We are a founding club of the BARFL and have established ourselves as one of the most popular teams in the competition. We have won the pre-season competition twice (1998, 2000), and after many agonising preliminary final loses we were finally rewarded with our first Grand Final victory in 2001.

Aside from our BARFL involvement, North London Lions sees itself as a club with a serious commitment to promoting Australian football to the wider British community and the world. Over many years it has dedicated itself to a number of initiatives that have done much to promote the game beyond the Australian expatriate community in London.

In particular, the club is proud of its pioneering efforts in establishing links with leagues outside the UK. We were the first British club to play against a representative Danish team in Denmark (1992), and the first against an Irish club in Ireland (1999). The 1992 match against Denmark is arguably Australian football's first ever International, and the club continues to commit itself to at least one overseas match every year. The club has also worked hard to support emerging teams outside of the London area and we play the leading role in supporting junior development programs in English schools. In addition, North London has made a huge commitment to the all-British Australian Rules Football Team in providing coaches, equipment, players and facilities.

Our famous victory song:

It's a grand old flag, it's a high flying flag
It's the emblem for you and for me
It's emblem of the team we love
The team of the red and the black (ack ack)
Every heart beats true for the red and the black
As we sing this song to you (what do we sing?)
Should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the red and the black (ack ack)
